Sejarah Merangin - Kabupaten Merangin adalah salah satu kabupaten di Provinsi Jambi, Indonesia. Luas wilayahnya 7.668.61 km² dengan populasi 335.000 jiwa. Ibu kotanya ialah Bangko. Kabupaten Merangin merupakan pemekaran dari Kabupaten Sarolangun-Bangko dan terbagi menjadi 9 kecamatan yang terbagi lagi menjadi 141 desa. Program Unggulan Pemerintah Kabupaten Merangin (Pemda Merangin) adalah Pendidikan Gratis, Kesehatan Gratis dan Meningkatkan SDA tentunya.

Berdasarkan Keputusan Sidang Komite Nasional Indonesia (K.N.I) Sumatera di Bukit Tinggi pada tahun 1946 ditetapkan bahwa Pulau Sumatera dibagi menjadi tiga sub Provinsi, yaitu : 

• Sub Provinsi Sumatera Utara
• Sub Provinsi Sumatera Tengah
• Sub Provinsi Sumatera Selatan

Kemudian dengan UU Nomor 10 tahun 1946 sub provinsi tersebut ditetapkan menjadi provinsi, dimana daerah Kresidenan Jambi yang terdiri dari Kabupaten Batang Hari dan Kabupaten Merangin tergabung dalam Provinsi Sumatera Tengah. Dengan Undang-Undang Darurat Nomor 19 tahun 1957 yang kemudian diubah menjadi Undang-Undang Nomor 18 tahun 1958, dibentuklah Provinsi Daerah Tingkat I Jambi yang terdiri dari :

• Kabupaten Batang Hari
• Kabupaten Merangin
• Kabupaten Kerinci

Dalam perjalanan sejarah, dengan dibentuknya Provinsi Daerah Tingkat I Jambi, yang sekaligus juga dibentuknya Kabupaten Merangin (wilayahnya saat ini adalah Kabupaten Merangin, Kabupaten Sarolangun, Kabupaten Bungo Tebo ) yang beribukota di Bangko. Kemudian ibukota Kabupaten Merangin dipindahkan ke Muara Bungo yang diputuskan melalui sidang DPRD. Selanjutnya, dengan adanya gerakan PRRI tahun 1958 Kantor Bupati Merangin di bakar dan dibangun kembali pada tahun 1965 sebagai persiapan Kantor Bupati Sarolangun Bangko. Setelah berdirinya Kabupaten Sarolangun Bangko melalui UU No. 7 tahun 1965, maka pusat pemerintahan ditempatkan di Bangko dan juga menempati bangunan tersebut. Setelah itu pindah ke Kantor yang baru di jalan Jendral Sudirman Km2, sedangkan kantor lama menjadi Kantor Dinas Pendapatan Daerah Tingkat II.

Dengan adanya pemekaran wilayah sesuai dengan UU No. 54 tahun 1999 tentang pembentukan Kabupaten Merangin, Kabupaten Sarolangun, Kabupaten Tebo dan Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timur, maka wilayah Kabupaten Sarolangun Bangko dimekarkan menjadi dua yaitu Kabupaten Sarolangun dan Kabupaten Merangin. Kabupaten Sarolangun beribukota di Sarolangun dan Kabupaten Merangin beribukota di Bangko. Dasar pembentukan wilayah Kabupaten Merangin adalah Undang-undang Nomor 54 tahun 1999 tentang pembentukan Kabupaten Sarolangun, Kabupaten Tebo, Kabupaten Muara Jambi dan Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timur (LN tahun 1999 Nomor 182, TLN Nomor 39030). Kabupaten Merangin merupakan Pengembangan dari Kabupaten Sarolangun Bangko dan hari jadinya tanggal 5 Agustus 1965.
